Phytonutrients For Virgo Season

Chromotherapy of the color chartreuse, Astro-Anatomy applications of Virgo & Mercury, assimilation of nutrients, the biological activity of phytonutrients found in our whole foods, and a Fennel Monograph

WELCOME BACK, Friends!

The following blog post is the final installment of the Phytonutrients Per Zodiacal Series! We’ve entered Virgo Season, so we are going to look at light green phytonutrients and how they support our digestion and assimilation of nutrients. This information is based on how I’ve come to understand the medicinal properties of all of our botanical allies. This includes our whole foods through their natural compounds called phytonutrients, which express different colors while offering various health benefits.

We will explore the healing properties of green phytonutrients, with integrated concepts such as medical astrology, chakras, and color therapy, which is essentially the basis of how I approach food! I believe we all have a story to tell as it relates to food whether it is culturally, psychologically, physiologically, spiritually, financially, or emotionally. I want to help others find trust with their bodies (and intuition) through developing an allyship with whole foods and plants.

Phytonutrients (paired with Chromotherapy) is a good place to start, and I am very passionate about these plant-based nutrients. It is my belief that phytonutrients are the lost language between plant and human, and our ancestors may have been able to determine the healing properties of their food just by observing their color. It is also my hope that after reading this blog post, you’ll pick up on the health benefits of whole food just by color alone. As Artists and Magicians/Occultists, we should learn the language of our Body Consciousness in ways that our creative minds can understand, and there is one shared language among us folk: the language of color.

Of course there is a lot of nuance, information, vitamins and minerals, herbs, and so much more that can be discussed and therefore, it’s best to work with me 1:1 so I can help you navigate through The Holographic Phytonutrients Program I created, and their vibrational medicine as I’ve come to understand them.

Virgo

If you were born between August 23 - Sept 22, then you are a Solar Virgo, meaning the Sun was in the sign of Virgo on the day you were born. Virgo is an Earth sign that rules data, analysis, service to others, health and wellness, and medicine. It is a sign that is detail-oriented, reliable, and organized. If you’ve been tuning in to this series for a while, you know I am not referencing the traits of someone with the Sun in Virgo, rather the traits of the energy of Virgo. Mercury rules Virgo, and this is a planet that is associated with communication, the nervous system, and cognition. The symbol that represents Virgo is the maiden carrying a sheaf of wheat. There are connections to the Agrarian Goddess Demeter/Ceres and Virgo, which emphasizes this sign’s Earth element. Of all the Earth signs, Virgo is most interested in reality, facts, and numbers for the benefit of others. The symbolism of the sheaf of wheat carries over nicely when we think about truth, reality, and facts as nourishment. Sometimes finally getting to the root and truth of the matter feels like it unloads weight off of one’s back, and brings revitalization. However, in a less symbolic way, this sign is about sustenance, and even medicine. I always think about this in terms of the generation with Pluto in Virgo (1956-1972), who witnessed the reemergence of homeopathy, natural medicine, and holistic health. This generation came after Pluto in Leo (1937-1958), where there was more emphasis on Hollywood Glamour, and consumerism. During the Pluto in Leo Era, Art Deco, Futuristic Art, and Science Fiction Literature were themes and aesthetics were very popular, and even have inspired a lot of our way of moving forward with technology. The 1939 New York World Fair, famously featured the theme “The World of Tomorrow, in which many contributed designs to showcase technological progress, and the belief that science and industry could create a better world. This is apt because Leo, a sign known for its “showcasing” and theatrics, as well as its vibrant proclivities, is opposite to Aquarius, the sign that rules technological advancements and aesthetics that draws on the mind’s imagination of the future. Coincidentally, this World of Tomorrow fair became a hopeful distraction from the morose and bleak day-to-day life of The Great Depression.

However, when Pluto went into Virgo, this began a new generation that went back to herbalism, preventative medicine, natural healing, and brought alternative therapies into the mainstream. Interestingly, in the 1964-65 New York World Fair, which had a theme titled “Peace Through Understanding”, Walt Disney played a pivotal role, and contributed his own innovative designs with the vision of future that reflected the Space Age optimism during the Mid-60’s, which was in the middle of the Pluto in Virgo Era instead. However, Pluto was not alone in the sign of Virgo, Uranus, the planet of sudden changes, revolutions, and innovations was there, too. The Death, Rebirth, and Reanimation themes of Pluto merging with the Unconventional approach of Uranus in the sign of Virgo may have contributed to the advancement during this time. The Futuristic Art from the 1930’s, when Pluto was in Leo, served as inspirational fuel for the Space Age aesthetics of the Pluto in Virgo 1960’s

Virgo is associated with the 6th House of Health, Work, and Service to Others. In this house, themes surrounding our physical and mental well-being through diet, exercise, and disciplined habits may surface. Our methods of how one approaches work, routine, analysis, efficiency, and service to others (and society) are seen in this area of the natal chart. When this house is highlighted, it may indicate someone who chooses (or perhaps finds themselves) in a career geared towards care of others (and pets, as pets can be represented in this house), supportive roles, and health and wellness professions.

In Medical Astrology, Virgo rules the small intestines, digestion, and assimilation (of nutrients). In addition, since Virgo is ruled by Mercury, there is an aspect of the nervous system that is associated with this sign. Of course, we discussed the connection between the gut and brain through the gut biome (bacteria) and how our “gut bugs” communicate through the gut-brain axis. A.T. Mann gives the following to Virgo: the abdominal organs, assimilations, duodenum, bowels, pylorus, large and small intestines, lower dorsal nerves, nails, peristaltic action of the bowels, spleen, and food and diet itself.

Anahata and Chromotherapy Applications of the Color Chartreuse

If we layer the Zodiac Wheel on top of the Color Wheel, we see that Virgo aligns with the color I identify as Chartreuse, also known as yellow-green. This color has an interesting history. It was first utilized in the late 1880's in a fashion magazine. In the 1920's, it was known as a rebellious color for the fashion accessories of that time. In the 1960's, it was used to market to young people, and could be found in both psychedelic artwork and nature scenery. By the 1970's its popularity decreased, but not for long. It was once again a color of boldness and rebellion in the 1980's. However, by the 2010's, it was found mostly in the office buildings of tech companies, as it was thought to be a color of creative thinking in the field of technology.

In Chromotherapy, green is used to support the respiratory system, which Mercury rules in Medical Astrology, and yellow is utilized for digestion support, liver cleansing, and positive emotional wellbeing. Yellow-greens have a tendency to stimulate creativity, enthusiasm, and ingenuity, but may evoke anxiety since it is a green that is mixed with yellow, a color associated with excitability. The color green is associated with Anahata, also known as the Heart Chakra. The word Anahata means unstuck in Sanskrit. This chakra aligns with the heart, thymus, lungs, and breasts. In addition, Dr. Deanna Minich, PhD gives blood vessels to this chakra. Some keywords she associates with this chakra are: compassion, expansiveness, and interestingly, service

In the West, we associate the heart with love, but in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the heart is associated with Joy. In TCM, the heart is considered the "Emperor" of the organs. The heart's Qi (vital life force) is said to govern blood circulation, as well as the dilation of the blood vessels. Fire is the element associated with this organ. In addition, the lungs are associated with grief and sadness. According to TCM, prolonged or unresolved grief can lead to respiratory issues or a weakened immune system. The lungs are thought to play a role in processing grief and letting go, and one who is sad may find themselves holding their breath without realizing it.

For my clients, the Chartreuse/Virgo Spectrum brings up two themes: who are their Herbal Allies? and how well is my client’s body assimilating nutrients after digestion? In the Phytonutrients For Summer (Cancer + Leo Season) we discussed that agni, also known as digestive fire, exists in the Solar Plexus region. However, what happens to the nutrients in the food/herbs we eat after digestion?

Think of botanical medicine as information for the body, and on the back of that, our bodies have to know what to do with that information. So, as we move up (technically downwards) from the Gold/Leo Spectrum, we get to Chartreuse/Virgo, then Emerald/Libra, and finally Aquamarine/Scorpio. Leo digests, Virgo assimilates the nutrients, Libra “connects” these nutrients to where they need to disperse throughout the body, and Scorpio releases excess from the body.

In order to achieve results from any healing treatment plan, our bodies need to effectively assimilate the nutrients and compounds from plants, food, herbs, supplements, and other treatments. This is where supporting the intestines and gut lining becomes essential, as a healthy gut is crucial for proper absorption and utilization of these beneficial substances.

The way I approach this can be different for everyone, because there are many reasons why our bodies aren’t taking in nutrients. For instance, as mentioned previously, sadness and grief may be held in the lungs of a client, and they may find themselves holding their breath unconsciously. When you hold your breath, you create stagnation in the body. The body is a closed system, and needs constant movement. The heart relies on breath so that blood can pump through the circulatory system, and messengers, like our hormones for instance, rely on healthy blood flow to get to their receptor sites. Without healthy circulation, our gut and intestines may not be able to do their job well, either. The digestive system breaks down food into basic nutrients like glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids. These nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream from the small intestine and then carried to cells throughout the body for energy and repair. In this case (and I am talking about botanicals only), I rely on a blend of circulatory herbs, gut healing herbs, and green phytonutrients.

In my program, I split the Heart area into three sections:

  • ♍︎ “Lower Heart”/Virgo (Assimilation)

  • ♎︎ Heart/Libra (Blood-Building)

  • ♏︎ “Upper Heart”/Scorpio (Recovery)

However, before moving on, it is important to know a couple of things:

  1. There is no “upper” or “lower” heart in the Traditional Chakra System. There is only The Heart.

  2. We are going “upwards” in chakras, but biologically, we are going downwards: The Solar Plexus aligns with digestive fire (Leo), but we’ve moved from The Solar Plexus to The Heart. In between these two chakras, we are discussing the assimilation of nutrients that happens in the intestines (Virgo). After which, removal of waste through defecation occurs (Scorpio).

  3. The Astro-Anatomy doesn’t align with the Seven Chakra System, and it doesn’t have to. These are two different systems entirely. In fact, when they do not align, it tells a bigger story about the body which is that each system or organ relies on so many other internal workings of the body that we are never consciously aware of. When you add in TCM to a holistic program for clients on top of Astrology and Chakra Healing, then you start to realize that healing is never really about one organ, one ailment, or  one condition. When I meditated on this concept, the message I received was, “all roads lead to the one road”, meaning that in most cases, no matter what angle you approach in holistic healing for the body, you will eventually get to the root of the cause if you follow the language of the Body Consciousness.

Energy is constantly moving, and astrological energy does the same. A perfect image of how I can visually explain the movement of astrological energy in the body is on the cover of a book called The Zodiac Salts of Salvation by George Washington Carey & Inez Eudora Perry:

This chart is called the Astro-Chemico-Physiological and Chromatic Chart, and it was drawn by Inez Eudora Perry.

Notice how the man on this chart is folded up on himself where his body is bent backwards, and his feet are touching his head. I am constantly drawn to the fact that Aries is associated with Cerise (a red-pink with deep red undertones) in Astro-Colors, and red is the color of the Root Chakra. Some associate the soles of the feet with the Root Chakra, in conjunction with the pelvis. However, these concepts are best explained and visualized in terms of Pisces/Violet/Crown Chakra. Look for Pisces in this chart, which is associated with the color violet, and violet is associated with the Crown Chakra. However, in Medical Astrology and Astro-Anatomy, Pisces rules the feet. If you look at this chart, the top of the head, which is the area that aligns with the Crown Chakra as well as the feet, are located in the Pisces/Violet portion of this chart.

Let’s look at an example where it doesn’t exactly line up, and to reiterate: it doesn’t have to. Virgo is labeled “Yellow-Green” here, but in my program, I call it Chartreuse. Recall that we discussed that in Astro-Anatomy, Virgo rules the intestines and assimilation of nutrients. It is associated with the 6th House of Health, Work, and Service to Others. However, it aligns with the Sacral Chakra area on the body pictured above. We have already discussed in previous posts about how Taurus/Terracotta and Gemini/Tangerine align with the Orange of the Sacral Chakra. Taurus is ruled by Venus. Both Gemini and Virgo are ruled by Mercury. Both Mercury and Venus have associations with generativity, fertility, and creation, which are all keywords of the Sacral. However, Virgo is placed here instead of Taurus or Gemini in the picture above. Notice how Taurus aligns with the throat, and Gemini aligns with the lungs of the body. This would be accurate in terms of Medical Astrology, as Taurus rules the throat and Gemini rules the Respiratory System, However, if we don’t eat (which is a task that requires the throat to swallow food in most cases, unless there is a client who is getting nutrients through an IV), or if we are stifling our breath, this creates improper Qi stagnation in the lungs and body, as well as the gut and intestines become dysregulated. In addition, when we restrict caloric intake, our gut biome becomes imbalanced. When this happens, we can become painfully bloated which impacts the lungs, and we may not be able to get a full breath in due to the fact that the abdomen is putting pressure on the lungs/ribs. Next time you take on a client with known gut imbalance or poor digestion, pay close attention to their breath, and see if maybe their breaths are more shallow and short. This is something I’ve noticed in myself and my clients. So, in other words: energy is constantly moving, and all roads lead to the one road in holistic healing.

Of note: In my Holographic Phytomancy Program, I’ve labeled the Pisces portion of the Zodiacal Color Wheel “Magenta/Silver” and Aries is renamed to “Crismon”.

Green Phytonutrients

For this spectrum, I like to employ green phytonutrients, but in an artistic way, my clients and I focus on light green whole foods. There isn’t a phytonutrient particularly more important in light green whole foods than dark green whole foods, however. This is just my creative approach to this program, so that the entire spectrum of whole foods are explored.

FIBER:

Green whole foods are abundant in fiber, which is extremely supportive for the intestines, digestion, and helps increase the assimilation of nutrients into the body. While not technically a phytonutrient in the strictest sense, I still wanted to make sure I mention it here. Dietary fiber isn’t digested or absorbed into the small intestine, however it feeds the beneficial bacteria that promotes a healthy microbiome. The role a healthy gut bacteria plays for the body is ubiquitous: it strengthens the immune system, maintains intestinal lining (preventing “Leaky Gut”), bolsters the Gut-Brain Axis communication, and reduces inflammation and bloating. More than that, the beneficial microbiota of the gut metabolizes xenobiotics and medications, protects the gut against pathogens, modulates the immune system, and aids in the absorption and assimilation of nutrients.

SULFORAPHANE

Sulforaphane is a sulfur-rich compound, and is found in cruciferous vegetables. However, before this compound becomes sulforaphane, it is in its inactive form called glucoraphanin, and it is only when it is damaged (by chewing, chopping, slicing) that it is converted into sulforaphane by coming in contact with a protective and defensive enzyme in the plant called myrosinase. Sulforaphane may possess anticarcinogenic and antioxidant properties by releasing detoxifying enzymes that protect the body against carcinogens, like glutathione S-transferase (GST) which helps excrete harmful substances from the body.

Because we are discussing Anahata, the Heart Chakra, I thought this would be of interest: Heart disease is caused by inflammation and narrowing of the arteries, but sulforaphane may have the ability to reduce arterial inflammation. While information is limited, sulforaphane is thought to be potentially protective against hypertension and atherosclerosis, as well.

Sulforaphane may also express an antidiabetic effect. One study involving 97 participants with Type 2 Diabetes were given sulforaphane, and fasting blood sugar decreased by 6.5%, as well as improved hemoglobin A1c, which is a marker of long-term blood glucose control. This implies that sulforaphane could help improve blood sugar regulation and overall glycemic control in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes, potentially offering an additional natural therapeutic option alongside conventional diabetic treatment.

Lastly, by inhibiting the overgrowth of anaerobic microflora, sulforaphane was found to improve bowel movements, and decrease constipation. This compound acts as an antimicrobial in the presence of oxygen, which kills certain bacteria. In addition, It also benefits the gut’s environment by supporting the gut biome and immune network, and may be able to even reprogram the gut microbiome.

Herbal Allies

I mentioned that the theme of Herbal Allies in the Virgo/Chartreuse Spectrum of The Holographic Phytomancy Program comes up for my clients. Recall that I referred to our Botanical Friends as information that the body takes in, assimilates, connects, and finally releases the excess of. Imagine it like this: you are “inputting data” when you are dropping your favorite tincture into your daily tea, or when you take your blend of hormonal herbal powders that are put into a convenient capsule. The body has to “read” that data and integrate it into your body. Because Virgo is the sign of information and analysis, I put “Herbal Allies” in this spectrum for clients to explore. Because this portion of the program is so unique client-to-client, I decided to pick one digestive herb, light-green in color, and ruled by Virgo and created a monograph! Instinctively, I went with fennel. I can’t think of a better herb for this blog post!

Enjoy! ↓

Why Can’t Anyone Help Me? The Nightmare of Adenomyosis, by Maria Yeager

Bonny Casel, ND; School of Natural Medicine UK

I really hope you enjoyed the Phytonutrients Per Zodiacal Series. It has been a beautiful exploratory monthly ritual through the entire spectrum of phytonutrients, and as I sit and reflect on this body of work, I can’t help but think that it’s not complete. There is so much more I want to say, and moving through the Zodiacal Color Wheel has taught me so much about Holistic Health and my own practice.

As of this month, I have graduated from two out of three modules of my 3 year Natural Medicine Course (Quantum Botanicals). I am officially now a licensed Healing Diets CoachHerbal Medicine Consultant, and Holistic Health Practitioner with one year remaining. In this last module, I am learning about flower essences, Felt Sense, quantum physics/quantum healing, and Vibrational Medicine. I can only imagine how this last bit of information will round out my navigation through health and wellness, and vibrantly impact my overall practice. I would love to continue this series, and add more information about tissue salts, flower essences, and more.

Truthfully, each month was like sitting with deities of all kinds, and allowing them to speak messages to me through the attributed frequency of each color of the rainbow. Therefore, I never really know what comes forward before I write. Sometimes a general theme is overwhelming, and it aligns with the zodiacal season. Sometimes I research the history of a color, and learn that its chromotherapy applications align with the Astro-Anatomy of a sign.

I remember the first day I started my Holographic Phytonutrient Database Spreadsheet. I began by drawing the Zodiacal Wheel, and colored in the signs with each color of the rainbow starting with red for Aries. I correlated he colors of the phytonutrients to each chakra and element, and each element with the elements of the tarot. I included Kira Sutherland’s work on flower essences, and Judith Hill’s work on Astro-Nutrients. There is so much I included in this spreadsheet that hasn’t even made it to a blog post or social media post, and I am foaming at the mouth to re-create this series! I like to leave instrumental music on while I study, and while this work was unfolding (which happened over a matter of many, many months), an album popped up on my music feed titled “The Rainbow Goblins” by Masayoshi Takanaka. When I realized it was an early 80’s prog-rock concept album about Rainbow Goblins, I put it on loop, and it was the spiritual fuel I needed to keep going (I also love obscure music, especially prog-rock).

By this time, I had stumbled upon Dr. Deanna Minich’s work with phytonutrients and Chakra Healing from a Nutritional Scientist’s academic point of view. I don’t remember actually looking her up, but she appeared on my instagram feed. Eventually, we began to follow each other, and she has been a guiding light for me. I respect her, and look up to her in so many ways, and every day I wake up knowing that Dr. Deanna Minich, The Queen of Phytonutrients, is supportive of my work.

Following this, and too not long after, Kira Sutherland, a prolific Medical Astrology and Sports Nutritionist has reached out to me, and has offered her support and her guidance. I remember an Astrologer Friend sending me her work years ago, and I just thought how amazing and powerful her work was! The way she approaches health and wellness is certainly respectable, and I cannot wait to learn more from her.

As I worked on my Holographic Phytonutrient Database, I felt, and still feel, like I was “downloading” information from Source. However, this information didn’t feel new to me at all. Once I got into the flow of this spreadsheet, messages came flooding in, and I got the sense that somewhere in time, I have definitely done this before. This work, in some way, is bonded to my being across spacetime, and it was only a matter of time before it was unlocked. Some people were Priestesses, Queens, or legendary warriors in a past life, but I worked with vibrational healing from the language of the creative. Each time I return to this work, more is revealed that connects my current life to whatever life this work began, and I believe it manifests in every life I choose to reincarnate into. Whatever I decide to do with my life: performance art, design, writing, visual art- it seeps through, begging to be reanimated and rebirthed into a new time and space. You could say that, through the development of this practice, as well as through this work, I have found that piece of me that I have been looking for, for many years.

This is working with the Botanical World from an Artist’s and Magician’s perspective. This is Plant Mediumship. This is building trust with your intuition, and Body Literacy while changing your relationship with food without dogma or restrictive diets. You get to decide how each color impacts you uniquely, and you get to speak directly to the spirit of the plant through the color it expresses.

I cannot wait to add more information to this work, and continue to share with you all. Of note: we are a couple months away from opening client work bookings officially. If this way of healing is interesting to you, subscribe below to be notified when client books open!
