Merging Scientific Literature of Orange Phytonutrients with The Sacral Chakra, The Magician, Communication, and Therapeutic Uses of the Color Orange

PREFACE

Welcome to Gemini Season! We’re working our way around the zodiacal wheel, and using modern scientific literature on phytonutrients and whole foods, paired with esoteric healing modalities and medical astrology to create a new approach to holistic healing! To catch up, read the Phytonutrients Per Zodiacal Series for: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, and Taurus.

If you have not read the Introductory to the Holographic Herbal post, I recommend doing so! The Introductory Post walks you through how I use color, intuition, astrology and anatomy, and phytonutrients in one healing practice for Body Literacy and Intuitive Eating.

HI FRIENDS!

It makes me so happy to hear from you all, and how much this practice has impacted your everyday life, or how it has influenced your magical practice. It brings me so much joy to be a part of an artistic community of magicians and herbalists, and it really changes my life to share our experiences together. If you ever want to discuss a blog post, please don’t be afraid to message me on IG! If you’re new to this blog, and have no idea what’s going on here at Holographic Phytomancy

WHAT IS HOLOGRAPHIC PHYTOMANCY?

Hi! I’m Samantha (Phyto Holographic Sam), and I am currently in school for Herbal Medicine, Healing Diets, and Quantum Botanicals and Quantum Healing. Last year, when Venus went retrograde into Leo, my friend Mandy Wilde (Wild Medium) and I did a Venus Rx Instagram collaboration for the entire duration of Venus’ Rx journey. At some point, we decided to incorporate my knowledge of phytonutrients and astrology when the Sun went into Libra. I wrote a blog post about Phytonutrients for Venus (Libra and Taurus), and I have been continuing the Phytonutrients Per Zodiacal Season Series since.

In the beginning of this year, I started to take on case study clients for an assignment for school. These case studies participated in Herbal Medicine/Herbal Ally programs and a Healing Diets/Phytonutrient program that I have created on my own (inspired by my mentor’s teaching). Through this experience, I am truly understanding the biological activities and esoteric healing properties of all of our botanical allies (herbs and whole foods).

How Do I Do It?

I use Astro-Herbalism, Astro-Anatomy, Astro-Colors, the color of phytonutrients, the colors associated with the Seven Chakras, modern Scientific Literature, esoteric wisdom, and Vibrational Medicine to guide my case study clients through a bespoke healing program that focuses on their goals. Through this experience, we work through the 12 Zodiacal Signs, Seven Chakras, and there is some overlap with Traditional Chinese Medicine meridians and Ayurveda doshas.

Of course there is so much information and nuance to talk about, and I will save most of that for the books that I am writing. However, if you’re interested, you can check out my Workbooks and Guidebooks if you’re excited to dive deeper into my work with herbs and phytonutrients. Alternatively, you can wait for when I open up my 1:1 Client Work soon, and a bespoke healing program can be developed for you personally!

This practice is meant for artists, creatives, and magicians who want to have a creative relationship with food. By approaching food from a artistic perspective, and focusing on color (the phytonutrients in food that express different biological activities) and diversity, we can construct a unique and colorful relationship with food on our own terms, in our own eccentric ways, and in methods that make sense to our imaginative minds and behaviors. However, it is important to incorporate seasonal foods (foods that are literally in season in your area), while maintaining a balanced and nutritional dish. In other words, it’s not a practice in which one eats exclusively orange foods, but instead keeps the intention on orange foods to add to their (balanced and diverse) meals. The magician’s aspect to this practice is that every time one eats, they are honoring the zodiac season, and calling upon the planet/deity/energy that rules that particular zodiac season. In this instance, for Gemini Season, Mercury is the ruler.

WHAT IS A PHYTONUTRIENT?

Phytonutrients are chemical compounds that are found in plants, veggies, & fruits. They are what give our food their color, and are divided into categories depending on the color they express in different fruits and vegetables. Phytonutrients offer certain health benefits through their biological activity.

WHAT ARE CHAKRAS?

Chakras are a part of an ancient system that originated in India, and they were mentioned in the Vedas, which was a large text of esoteric wisdom written from 1500 - 1000 BC. In Sanskrit, chakra means “spinning wheel”, and this refers to certain points in the body that are thought to give off specific energies, and they correspond to organs and systems within the body. The traditional practice only focus on the Seven Chakra System being: The Root, The Sacral, The Solar Plexus, The Heart, The Throat, The Third Eye, and The Crown.

Gemini, Mercury, and Astro-Anatomy

Gemini Season starts from around May 22 until June 21st. In this Gemini Season, we will see a Full Moon in Sagittarius on May 23rd. On the same date, Venus, the planet of beauty, luxury, pleasure, art, and peace will transit into the sign of Gemini, followed by Jupiter, the planet of luck, expansion, growth, and spirituality, on the 25th. Mercury, the planet that rules Gemini goes into its own sign on June 3rd. We then get a New Moon in Gemini on June 6th, and a Mercury cazimi on June 14th when the Sun and Mercury conjoin in the sky, setting a new cycle for Mercury all together.

Gemini, the third sign of the zodiac, is an Air Sign with mutable energy. The element of air represents our thoughts, and this translates to the swords in the tarot, where the swords suit symbolically embodies our thought, intellect, and communication. In addition, Gemini has some correspondence with the Third House in Astrology, which relates to our verbal and intellectual expressions, communications, public speaking, neighborhoods, siblings, transportation, and early education

The ruling planet of Gemini is Mercury. The Roman god Mercury (Hermes in Greek mythology) served as the messenger God and facilitated communication from God to humans. He was also the only God who was able to traverse the Underworld, and come back again, whereas anyone else who visited the Underworld had to stay. In Astrology, Mercury embodies the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom, clarity, thought, communication, speaking, expression, intellect, curiosity, information and data, and understanding.

Astro-Colors have been incorporated into Medical Astrology for many years, and can be appealing for those of us who are artists. Gemini falls in the true Orange spectrum. Orange corresponds to the Sacral Chakra. In Medical Astrology, Gemini governs the hands, shoulders, arms, lungs, nerves, fingers, the nervous system and respiratory system. Gemini is seen as the inhale, and Sagittarius, the opposing sign of Gemini, is the exhale. With this in mind, I connect the Gut-Brain Axis in between the Gemini/Sagittarius and Orange/Blue spectrum. This is where our Nervous System can be affected by the health of the gut biome. (For a brief example, when we are bloated, we can sometimes experience shallow breaths due to not being able to draw in a full inhale.) In addition, Mercury governs the thyroid gland’s ability to regulate respiration and metabolism, according to A.T. Mann [1]. Coincidentally, Sagittarius aligns with true blue, and blue corresponds to the Throat Chakra which aligns with the thyroid.

About the Color Orange and color psychology

Chicken or egg: is “orange” a word for the orange fruit, or does the orange fruit bear the name that describes the color? Answer: The Sanskrit word for orange tree, naranga, is where the English word orange is derived from. Geoluhread is the Old English term for “yellow-red”, which referred to the color orange. By the seventeenth century, orange became a part of the vocabulary as a word for the color. Finally, in the 1600s, Sir Isaac Newton identified five colors of the rainbow (red, yellow, green, blue, and purple), but then added orange and violet to this rainbow spectrum, totaling seven colors. He did this because he believed the number seven was considered a number of perfection and held metaphysical and esoteric properties.

Orange has an interesting history as this color has been used to convey spirituality, creativity, sensuality, warmth, harvest time, Halloween, autumn, and vibrancy. It is used for the color of sports teams, and even logos for companies such as Penguin Books, Sainsbury’s (a UK Grocery Store), Harley Davidson Motorcycles, Fanta Soda, Mastercard, Home Depot, and SoundCloud. Orange is used to arouse our senses and grab our attention. On one hand, it can be generative, and provoke us to be more social, optimistic, and bolster our energy levels. However, because of its attention-grabbing property, it is also used as a warning or caution sign, like traffic cones or safety vests. Dr. Deanna Minich, PhD, CNS, the Queen of Phytonutrients, says that “Orange is the color of The Flow”. In Dr. Minich’s many talks on phytonutrients, she mentions that male guppies turn orange to attract a mate [2]. Ironically, carotenoids, a phytonutrient we will talk about later in this post, are responsible for the orange color in these guppies [3].

Orange, The Sacral, and THERAPEUTIC uses of orange

Svadhisthana, the Sacral Chakra, is known as the dwelling place of the self. It aligns with our reproductive organs, urinary system, large intestine, kidneys, and lower digestion, and pelvis. I nicknamed this part of my body The Creative Portal a long time ago. I didn’t know much about Human Design back then, but I understand now that I am a Sacral-Authority Generator, and this makes sense as to why I’d identify my Sacral center as a Creative Portal. I also like to call the lower-belly area this nickname because, for some people, calling attention to their reproductive parts may be triggering for them. Moreover, some people do not have the ability to become pregnant, or want to. We can be the “parents” of our art, projects, scientific discoveries, and/or anything we create. This is the part of the body where we can tap into, and develop creative ways to navigate life’s issues, an obstacle, and a project (both in work and in art). It can help guide us to discover something new. If you’ve ever had a “gut feeling”, this is the part of the body where you have felt it. In one of his earlier books, Quantum Healing, which was published in 1989, Deepak Chopra states that the cells in our brain are no different than the cells in our stomach. He goes on to explain that the cells in our body eavesdrop on one another, and therefore a “gut reaction” is more related to our nervous system and neuronal cells. In essence, a gut feeling is the product or outcome of communication between the brain and gut through the Gut-Brain Axis. This can be applied to the entire body.

In Color Therapy, different colored light can be used to heal specific parts of the body, or it can be used to support mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual ailments. Orange is used to support the lungs, which help us breathe and communicate with each other, and remember that the lungs are ruled by Mercury in Medical Astrology. Orange is also used to improve the digestive system, and recall that orange correlates to the Sacral Chakra, which aligns with our lower belly.

The Magician, Lilies, & self-sufficiency

The Magician Tarot Card

The Magician

The first card in the tarot is The Magician, and it is associated with Mercury. Technically, the first card is The Fool, but the card is associated with the number zero. On The Magician card, we see a yellow background, and a figure (the Magician) wearing a red robe with a white toga or tunic. Above their head is the infinity symbol (lemniscate), and around their waist is the serpent eating its own tail (ouroboros). Both of these symbols represent self-sufficiency, infinite possibilities, cycles, renewal, and wholeness. The figure is standing behind a table, and a garden of roses and lilies surrounds them. On this table, we see the four suits (elements) featured in the tarot: the pentacle (earth; the physical), a wand (fire; energy), a sword (air; thought), and a cup (water; emotions). The tools on his table are symbolic of the concept that humans possess all the ability, or magic, inside of them to create anything they want. The Magician already has all the tools they need to affect change. We are already the Magician by default, and the secrets of the universe are contained within us. This can be reflected if we take a little side-quest with the feature of the lilies on this card:

Lilium candidum, Madonna, or White Lily, is a symbol of renewal, and has been used in folk medicine across the Balkans, Middle East, Europe, North Africa, and Mexico, and has been used for treating skin issues and as an anti-inflammatory remedy. It is also used in the making of cosmetics due to its gentleness on the skin.

One study [4] set out to understand lily’s medicinal properties and its phytochemicals. In this study, they acknowledge the use of the lily plant in folk medicine, and what they found was that the plant’s compounds, kaempferol, linalool, citronellal, and humulene, impact the secretion of the proinflammatory cytokines called interleukin-6 and interleukin-8 (IL-6 & IL-8). These cytokines are involved in some diseases like diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, IL-6 & IL-8 play a role in delayed wound healing, and in conjunction with The Magician card, I find this fascinating.

IL-6 was once thought to be a factor involved in the immune response, by way of the maturation of B-cells, a type of white blood cell [5], into antibody-producing cells. However, it has been since identified as a cytokine that has many different roles, but specifically plays a part in significant functions of the nervous system (remember: the nervous system is governed by Mercury), and that it participates in neurogenesis, which is a bodily process in which new neurons are created and then integrated in the central nervous system (CNS). While this cytokine is important, too much of it is indicated in chronic inflammation and diseases [6].

IL-8 is another cytokine that needs to be regulated and balanced, and is controlled at the genetic level in the CNS to maintain a healthy immune system. This cytokine attracts certain immune cells to the brain during injury or inflammation, and is produced by certain brain cells [7]. In particular, a brain cell called an astrocyte, has been identified to regulate IL-8 [8]. Moreover, the sympathetic nervous system plays a role in tissue regeneration and inflammation through nerve endings which release various neurotransmitters [9], which act like chemical messengers (messages and communications are ruled by Mercury) throughout our body. The phytochemicals in lilies, which modulate the levels of cytokines, influence both the immune and nervous systems, thereby supporting wound healing.

In conjunction with what we already know about Mercury, who is a fast-moving energy with the ability to create and communicate, with the generative Sacral, Svadhisthana, and its corresponding color orange, the color of vitality, fertility, and warmth, we are reminded of the connection between the physical and the spiritual. This concept is further emphasized by the magician’s right hand pointing towards the heavens (spirit), and their left hand pointing to Earth (physical)

The connection here is that, from a holistic perspective, the nervous system plays a role in our ability to self-heal. In essence, if we are stressed, inflamed, or injured, we can trigger a cascade of cytokines which depend on a delicate balance for our benefit, but when the body and nervous system are over encumbered by them, they inhibit our ability to heal. From the esoteric perspective, the lilies on The Magician’s card, ruled by Mercury, reminds us that we have the skills within us already to heal ourselves, and this is reflected back to us from the symbolism provided by the lilies that symbolize renewal, and the lemniscate above the magician’s head, as well as the ouroboros around their waist. Is it possible that one of the “secrets kept inside humankind” is our innate ability to regenerate and restore, and are the lilies on this card a subtle note for our subconscious to remember this secret?

Carotenoids & healthy fats

When addressing the Orange/Sacral/Gemini Spectrum of the Holographic Phytonutrient Program, I integrate the knowledge from Dr. Deanna Minich’s Whole Detox Protocols, and I focus on carotenoid-rich orange foods and healthy fats. The biological activity of both carotenoids and healthy fats are in line with the wisdom we’ve learned about Mercury and Gemini. Carotenoids develop that orange, yellow, and red pigment we see in foods, like carrots, and are classified into two main groups: Xanthophylls & Carotenes. There are more than 600 types of carotenoids:

  • Alpha Carotene

  • Beta Carotene

  • Beta Cryptoxanthin,

  • Lutein

  • Zeaxanthin

  • Lycopene

In Dr. Minich’s work, she highlights that orange foods, which are rich in beta-carotene, help regulate hormone levels and ovulation, and we touched on this in the Phytonutrients for Taurus Season post. The body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A, which is a fat soluble micronutrient [10], so it’s best to consume it paired with a healthy fat to improve the absorption. Vitamin A is known to support the function of the lungs. In fact, getting enough vitamin A intake is essential for early lung development, alveolar (tiny air sacs in the lungs) formation, as well as the maintenance and regeneration of tissues [11]. Chronic vitamin A deficiency is associated with harmful changes in the pulmonary epithelial lining, which disrupt the respiratory system. Vitamin A deficiency can also lead to severe tissue dysfunction and respiratory diseases [12]. In addition, beta carotene has been shown to have positive effects against chronic lung diseases (asthma, emphysema, COPD, acute lung injury, etc), and both in vitro and in vivo studies support these preventative properties [13].

Studies show long-term supplementation of carotene improves cognitive function [14], and higher levels of carotene found in blood of people with less depression symptoms, than of those who had more depression symptoms [15]. Furthermore, for both populations with or without cognitive impairment, studies show that carotenoids protect mental functions, however more studies are needed [16]. Specific types of carotenoids, optimal dosage of those carotenoids, and duration of treatment are all factors that need to be studied more to better understand how carotenoids support the function of the brain. On the other hand, it could be the fact that all phytonutrients have an antioxidant quality to them, which could explain why so many fruits and vegetables have a supportive role in mental, physical, and emotional health and wellbeing.

We discussed healthy fats in the previous blog post, so be sure to swing by to catch up!

“Fat helps give your body energy, protects your organs, supports cell growth, keeps cholesterol and blood pressure under control, and helps your body absorb vital nutrients. When you focus too much on cutting out all fat, you can actually deprive your body of what it needs most."

- Vasanti Malik, Research Scientist, Department of Nutrition at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

In essence, everything from our brains, to our organs, to our cells, to our hormones need healthy, unrefined fats. The cells are the basic foundations of our bodies (alongside bones), and it is imperative to incorporate healthy fats into our dietary routine. In fact, fats are the building blocks of hormones. Research suggests that certain fats, like omega-3 fatty acids, can improve hormone levels and even fertility. However, unhealthy fats, such as trans fats and saturated fats, can lead to problems like insulin resistance. Therefore, prioritizing healthy fats can be beneficial to our hormone health. Additionally, dietary fats play an essential role in the health of our brains, and are not only needed for the function of our neurons, but for the literal structural integrity of them [17]. On the other hand, eating too much or too little dietary fats can contribute to the development or exacerbation of neurological/neuropsychiatric disorders [18]. However, there is an interconnected and complex web between dietary fats, brain health, and the gut biome that needs to be parsed out.

To begin, food sensing is the first stage in how our body uses energy, and different signals are produced by nutrients in our gut, fat tissues, muscles tell our brain the status of our metabolism. When these signals reach the brain, the brain will then release neuropeptides, which regulate how we process the nutrients we’ve eaten, our eating habits, and how we burn that energy. This is all very Taurean, and remember that Taurus comes before Gemini. You may have heard the gut being referred to as the “second brain”, and that is because derangement of gut flora (the bacteria in our gut) has the ability to not only lead to GI disorders like IBS, but also neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and depression. The bacteria in our gut influence the health of the gut barrier, our metabolism, gut motility, and even neurological physiology, as well as the risk of neurological diseases. In short, the endocrine system, immune system, and nervous system are all connected, and their neurotransmitters travel between the gut-brain axis, and dietary fats (short-chain fatty acids) play an important role in the health of these systems [19].

Our symbiotic relationship between bacteria has been discussed at length here and here.

So what’s the purpose of this blog post? To reiterate, I offer a new perspective on approaching food from an artistic and spiritual lens that incorporates color, Astrology, the Seven Chakra System, and the biological activity of the color associated with each chakra and zodiac sign. In doing so, this can bring a sense of magic and vibrancy to everyday life! Please remember to eat a balanced and nutritious meal with the intention on carotenoid-rich foods, as well as healthy fats like nuts, seeds, fish, etc. We’ve discussed how the biological activity of these phytonutrients correspond to Medical Astrology’s view on Mercury and Gemini (cognition, thought, and the respiratory system). We touched on the importance of the Gut-Brain Axis, which is where I place the Gemini/Orange Spectrum as it relates to orange being the color of the Sacral Chakra, and how it can impact our brain health and function. Moreover, the Sacral is associated with our ability to create, whether it is art or another human being. The color orange has been used to stimulate our senses, as well as influence warmth, fertility, vitality, and our ability to be social. Mercury and Gemini, both being generative energies that love socializing, communicating, expressing, and creating share these concepts with the color orange. Additionally, we learned that in Color Therapy, orange is used to support the lungs (Mercury) and digestive system (Sacral). Lastly, we tie this all together through The Magician tarot card, also ruled by Mercury, who reminds us that we inherently have the ability to affect change, self-heal, and renew, because we already have the tools at our disposal.

I’d love to hear how you will add Carotenoid-rich food and healthy fats into your daily dietary routine this month! Follow me on IG, and let me know!

Alternatively, you can subscribe to the holographic phytomancy substack

I am also on SubStack for two different tiers: A Free Subscriber Tier and Paid Subscriber Tier

As a Paid Subscriber, you will get access to all of my deep-dives into my health, wellness, and spiritual practice. This will be the only place where I will do this. I want to share my knowledge, experience, and everything I learn from school in a place where I feel safe to! In the Substack space, I will talk more about my mediumship with ancestors and plants, as well (this is the space where I talk more about my Mediterranean & Etruscan Ancestors). I will discuss my hypnagogic and lucid dream experiences, messages in mediumship and meditations, and personal work with deities that I feel comfortable sharing. This is something I have always wanted to do, but never felt like I was in a safe environment to do so. Technically, in my early 20s I did natal chart and tarot readings for people, but I moved away from making that a career when I transitioned into a live performer and visual artist. Every now and again, I have people reach out and ask me to do a reading for them! Now that I have made friends within the magic, occult, herbalist, and mediumship communities, I feel emboldened to revisit this gift, and revive this part of me, and hopefully you will feel the same and join me.

My mission is to help artists, creatives, and spiritualists to turn mundane wellness routines into vibrant restoration ceremonies through the utilization of modern scientific literature and esoteric wisdom

It is my belief that once we begin to understand the symptoms and innate rhythms of our body (Body Literacy), we can begin to step into the role of our authentic inner-artist and magician. It has been an honor to facilitate this work for my fellow creatives and magicians!

It is also my mission to un-brand health and wellness as a luxury product, to keep health, wellness, and spiritual healing far away from conspiracy theories, and finally to make health and wellness accessible and safe for all bodies. This, above all things, is very important to me. We must create safety and inclusivity in health, wellness, and spirituality spaces. This work cannot be done by one person alone. We must all do our part, and contribute to the future of healthcare.

With that being said, this blog is created from a chronic illness and trauma-informed perspective. I invite all bodies to this work, and if you find this work valuable- no matter how you identify- I welcome you to it.

Currently, I am not taking on clients, but a waiting list is dropping soon. That being said, when you subscribe to this substack, you are not paying for a service in which I take you on as a client. Furthermore, please never, ever change your lifestyle, diet, or routine without consulting a licensed professional. Please read my terms & conditions page on my website for more information.
